What separates a Charlotte Mason school from many others is the belief that knowledge is best pursued through contact with real things; the best books by the best minds, real life experiences, actual objects, and opportunities for explorations and discovery.
Nature study, gardening, composer study, and picture study are all integrated into every class curriculum, inviting students to learn more about our world, experience nature, grow and taste the fruit of their labors, and develop an early appreciation for the arts.
Language Arts curriculum is written in-house based on best practices in the area of reading and writing. Our foundation is high-quality literature - which Charlotte Mason called "living books." On top of this we develop good writers through an approach called "Doing Words" - giving students the freedom to talk, draw, and later write about topics and stories that are most meaningful to them while creating long-term memory connections and developing reading, grammar, and spelling skills in the process.
"Right Start Math" used in kindergarten through 4th grade, which is built upon the Japanese method of understanding numbers in groups of 5's and 10's to develop a strong sense of quantity and relationship. Students transition to Singapore Math in 5th grade.
Extracurriculars: Soccer, Chess
Gifted Education: Integrated classroom for students of all abilities with differentiated education in all subjects
Special Education: Push-in or pull-out resources for students as necessary
Parent Involvement: We ask each family to commit to being involved throughout the school year. A total of 24 hours over the course of the year is required. This should include 2 or 3 shifts at Ditto Re-Sale Shop (for a minimum total of 7 hours) and chaperoning at least one class enrichment trip. There are a number of other opportunities available as well.
SCCS is an amazing place for our son. The approach has fostered such a love of learning - from composer studies to nature studies - we love the respectful and caring approach that leaves our son telling us, "My sister HAS to go here when she's older. It's so much fun."
